Continuing to learn and grow is essential to being a competent dental assistant. Use the Continuing Competence Process to guide you.

Our Continuing Competence Program requires that you:

  • Assess your own competence to identify areas where learning is needed or will enhance your practice
  • create a learning plan to address your learning needs
  • Achieve your planned learning by completing Learning Activities
  • Analyze the outcome of your learning by writing a reflective result statement
  • maintain current practice through mandatory practice hours
  • participate in our audit of your competence records

This Continuing Competence Process infographic describes three steps to effective continuing competence program participation. The first step is to assess. Assess is illustrated by an apple to represent learning and a question mark. The assess step includes a list of questions dental assistants can ask themselves to help identify where they will benefit from learning. The question topics are: where there is a need to improve their practice, how they can enhance patient experience, if they lack confidence or knowledge in an area, and how they can learn and grow. The second step is to achieve. Achieve is illustrated by an apple to represent learning and a check mark. The achieve step includes a list of learning activities including seminars and webinars, being mentored, textbook and website review, continuing education courses. The third step is to analyze. Analyze is illustrated by an apple to represent learning and a magnifying glass. The analyze step includes a list of questions dental assistants can ask themselves to help identify if their learning activities helped them reach their learning goals. The question topics are: what they can do after completing their learning, how their learning improved their practice, and did they meet their learning needs. The infographic is set on a light gray background with bright blue, green and dark gray – which are our brand colours. The assess, achieve and analyze headings, and apples are bright blue. The apples have bright green leaves with dark gray used for the question mark, check mark and magnifying glass. There are green arrows that show the movement between the three steps. The text is dark gray.
