Launching the 2025-30 Strategic Plan

This year, Council approved a new strategic plan to guide the College’s future work. The plan focuses on four strategic goals:

  • Position the College in a Shifting Landscape
  • Elevate Practice Standards
  • Strengthen Stakeholder Trust and Engagement
  • Optimize Governance Effectiveness

These priorities support public protection and help ensure we remain responsive to a changing regulatory and health care environment.

Strengthening registration and public protection

Registration remains one of our core regulatory functions. During the year, Council approved a new suite of registration policies designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, consistency, and alignment with provincial legislation.

Enhancing continuing competence

The Continuing Competence Program continued to support professional growth through reflective learning and self-assessment. During the 2026 audit we reviewed the records of 500 dental assistants. This provided valuable insight into ways we can strengthen guidance and improve the program for registrants.

Reviewing Program Approval

An external review of our Program Approval function reinforced the importance of ensuring educational programs prepare graduates for safe entry to practice. The review identified opportunities to strengthen accountability, visibility, transparency, and evidence-informed decision making.

Expanding engagement and communication

Following recommendations from a communications review, we expanded public and stakeholder communications, including the growth of our social media presence. Through outreach activities we connected with students, registrants, educators, and oral health partners across Alberta and Canada.

Supporting effective governance

Council continued implementing recommendations from an external governance review, strengthening oversight, accountability, policy modernization, and public-interest decision making. These efforts support confidence in the regulation of dental assistants and our role in protecting the public.

Looking ahead

As health profession regulation continues to evolve, we remain committed to continuous improvement, evidence-informed governance, stakeholder engagement, and strong regulatory programs that support safe, competent, and ethical dental assisting care for Albertans.
