Public Members on Councils
The Government appoints public members to college councils as a step toward ensuring that health professions are governed in the public interest. Public members help to balance the interests of regulated members with those of the general public. By bringing an independent and objective perspective external to that of the regulated members, they ensure views of average health system users, third parties and the general public are considered in decisions made by the council.
As required by the Health Professions Act, half of the voting members of a college council must be public members. The other half are regulated members of the college.
