Annual requirements help support safe, competent oral health care for Albertans

Dental assistants across Alberta can now renew their annual practice permits for 2027. Renewal is open from October 1 to November 30, 2026.

Every dental assistant who holds a practice permit must renew by the deadline to continue practising on December 1. This includes new registrants, reinstatements, provisional registrants and those who recently transferred from the provisional register to the general register.

What dental assistants must do before renewing

To renew, dental assistants must:

  • maintain the required professional liability insurance and provide proof of coverage
  • complete the annual Patient Relations learning requirement
  • complete their Continuing Competence Program learning goals for the current year, complete a self assessment of their practice, and set two learning goals for the year ahead
  • show that their practice is current—typically by having at least 300 practice hours from the previous three years, or by meeting an approved equivalency requirement
  • review and update their contact and employment information
  • complete the renewal application, confirm their declarations and pay the renewal fee in the online portal

How renewal supports safe care

Annual renewal confirms that dental assistants continue to meet practice requirements and are authorized to practise in Alberta.

Professional liability insurance provides protection if concerns arise. Patient Relations learning reinforces respectful, appropriate professional boundaries. Continuing competence activities help dental assistants maintain and build their knowledge and skills. Current-practice requirements help ensure they remain connected to contemporary dental assisting practice. Accurate registration information also supports effective oversight and a reliable public registry.

Together, these requirements help the College regulate dental assistants in the public interest and support safe, competent and ethical oral health care for Albertans.

Renew by November 30

Dental assistants who intend to practise in 2027 should review the renewal requirements, sign in to the portal and submit a permit renewal application by November 30. A permit that is not renewed by the deadline will be suspended on December 1, and the dental assistant will not be authorized to practise.

Members of the public and employers can check a dental assistant’s registration status, permit expiry date, conditions and advanced practice authorizations in the College’s public registry.
