As a dental assistant registered with the College, you’ll hold a practice permit that confirms you’re authorized to work in Alberta. It tells you, your patients and your employer important details including:

  • your registration number
  • whether you’re a Registered, Provisional, or Courtesy Dental Assistant
  • the date you’re authorized to practice until
  • any conditions on your practice (including if you’re not authorized for an entry practice)
  • whether you’re authorized for any advanced practices

Print your practice permit

You must display your permit where you practise or be able to produce it when asked. You can print your permit in the portal. Any changes to your authorized skills or conditions on practice are immediately reflected on your permit.

Apply for advanced practice authorization

Advanced practices are services that are not part of the national entry to practice for dental assistants. The four advanced practice dental assisting services in Alberta are:

  • orthodontic
  • preventive
  • probing
  • prosthodontic

To provide these services you must hold a valid practice permit and be authorized by the College. If you’ve completed an approved program or can demonstrate substantial equivalence, you can apply for advanced practice authorization through the portal.

Once you’re authorized for a specific advanced practice, it will be shown as an authorization on your practice permit and in the public registry.

Verification of standing

A completed verification of standing form is proof of your registration and permit status that you can share with employers or other regulators. You may request one if you are a current or former registrant of the College.

How to submit a verification of standing request

What happens if I don’t meet the outstanding registration requirement(s) to transfer from the provisional register to the general register within 365 days?

The Registrar & CEO may consider an extension, if you provide a written request with reasons and an action plan to meet the outstanding requirement(s).

How can I get the condition(s) removed from my practice permit?

How a condition is removed will depend on what the condition(s) are. In most cases:

  • If you hold a provisional practice permit and have a supervision condition, you must meet the outstanding registration requirement(s) to transfer to the general register. The condition will be removed as part of the transfer process.
  • If you have a “not authorized to perform” intra-oral skill(s) condition, you must successfully complete formal education or the NDAEB clinical practice evaluation (CPE) for the intra-oral skill(s) and email a copy of your certificate of completion or CPE results letter to the College.

If you have a “must provide reporting” condition, you must meet the specified reporting requirements and contact the College’s Registrar & CEO.

How can I change my name on my permit?

We display your legal name on your permit, but we may add a preferred name upon request. Please submit a Correction Request form.
