About Our College

Alberta Dental Assistants are recognized leaders in regulation and governance, and support practices that establish universally-accepted standards of competence, professionalism, quality, and safety for the profession. The oral health of Albertans is deeply important to us—we maintain high standards so you can trust that you and your family are protected.

We protect the public by regulating the profession of dental assisting. We do this through our registration processes and monitoring continuing competence for dental assistants, so Albertans are assured of safe, quality oral health care.

We set standards to guide dental assistants’ practice, including our Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Our Policies guide the work we do to regulate dental assisting.

We also investigate complaints made about dental assistants and carry out discipline processes set out in legislation.

Organization Structure and Regulatory Framework

The diagrams below show our regulatory structure and how our Council, committees and staff fit that structure.

Our organization structure diagram is a flowchart showing that our authority comes from legislation via the Minister of Health and the Health Professions Act. Our Council of 5 public and 5 regulated members are responsible for our committees and our Registrar & C.E.O.

We have 8 committees. 4 are regulatory: Appeals, Competence, Registration and our Hearings/Complaint Review Roster. 4 are governance: Appointment, Finance Risk Management & Audit, Governance, and Program Approval.

Our Registrar & C.E.O. has a regulatory role and is responsible for staff.

The Registrar & C.E.O. directly oversees 4 staff: the Complaints & Operations Director, the Education & Practice Director & Privacy Officer, the Administrative Assistant and the Hearings & Registrar’s Assistant.

The Complaints & Operations Director oversees the Complaints Manager, the Hearings Director & Communications Manager, and the Registration & Finance Assistant.

The Education & Practice Director & Privacy Officer oversees the Competence Manager, the Registration Manager, and our Regulatory Compliance Advisors.

Staff’s roles are both regulatory and administrative, with complaints and hearings, education, practice, privacy, registration, competence and regulatory compliance all being regulatory roles. Operations, communications, administration and finance are all administrative roles.
