As a dental assistant in Alberta, you’re part of a regulated health profession.

Being regulated means you’re accountable for providing safe, competent, and people-centered care to Albertans. To practise, you must be registered with the College and hold a valid practice permit, renewed every year. The titles “dental assistant” (DA) and “registered dental assistant” (RDA) are protected under the Health Professions Act (HPA) and can only be used with our authorization.

Your role as a regulated professional

Your role as a regulated professional is supported by the College’s work as your regulator. We set the requirements for entering practice, issue and renew practice permits annually, oversee the Continuing Competence Program (CCP), and define the skills dental assistants are authorized to perform. It’s our role to protect the public by making sure only qualified, competent professionals provide dental assisting services.

By keeping your registration current, completing your annual requirements, and practicing within your authorized skills, you strengthen public trust and demonstrate your commitment to protecting Albertans.
