If you’ve filed a complaint about sexual abuse or sexual misconduct by a dental assistant, you may be eligible for funding to help pay for treatment or counselling.

When the College receives this type of complaint, the Complaints Director will contact you and provide the information you need to request and access funding, as required under the Health Professions Act (HPA).

Who’s eligible for funding

You may be eligible for funding if:

  • You’ve made a complaint about a dental assistant that meets the definition of sexual abuse or sexual misconduct under the HPA; and
  • you meet the definition of a patient as defined in the College’s Standards of Practice.

You don’t need a finding of guilt to receive support. For more information, please contact the Complaints Director at 780-486-2526.

Overview of funding

Funding is available to help cover the cost of treatment or counselling related to a complaint of sexual abuse or sexual misconduct, subject to the conditions set out in the Funding for Treatment and Counselling Regulation.

  • Funding is available to a patient for up to five years, or until the maximum amount of $24,600 has been reached, whichever comes first.
  • Funding may cover treatment or counselling provided by a regulated health professional or an unregulated counselling professional, subject to conditions under the regulation.
  • Funding ends if the complaint is dismissed.
  • If the Complaints Director approves funding, payments are administered through the Complaints Director. How to apply for funding

If you meet the eligibility, you can submit a request to the Complaints Director at professionalconduct@abrda.ca. You must submit a request after the complaint is filed and no later than five years after a finding of unprofessional conduct.
